Questions & Answers
Why must a model be so tall?

A model must fit into a designer's sample size clothing which are usually designed on models of certain sizes. Also, today's fashions generally look best on taller people.

When should I get my portfolio?

It depends on whether or not you decide to work with an agency or on your own. If you work with an agency, do not get a portfolio done right away. They will want to do one for you their own way. If you are on your own, follow the instructions in this guide.

Should I move to New York to pursue a career in modeling?

Absolutely not! New York is glamorous, but there are opportunities all over the world.

Should I quit my job to become a professional model?

Absolutely not! For most people in most cities, modeling is a part-time job. Before you can even consider modeling as a full-time career, it will usually take six months to a year to get enough experience and to become well known.

How long can a modeling career last?

Under the best of circumstances, it can last as long as you want it to.

How can I tell if I have what it takes to become a model?

You can read the fashion magazines an compare yourself to the models you find there. If you have the right look, you can probably model. After all, modeling is a result of skills training. If you are tall enough, you could possibly be a high fashion model.

Can a modeling career lead to an acting career?

Yes! Many well-known actors and actresses began their careers as models.

How do I get on a magazine cover?

By having a "look" that will sell magazines! The eyes have a lot to do with it, but there is no guarantee that any model, no matter how successful, will ever make a cover.

How can I get in a magazine?

Keep your eyes open for photographic bylines an editorial listings of photographers in any magazine. Then contact them in the manner described in this guide.

What are the basic items needed on a booking (job)?

Always take you portfolio in case a photographer, agent or client has not seen it. In addition to the items listed for your tote bag, take the following: a nude-color bra, body stocking or panty-hose; good jewelry as well as half a dozen pieces of pretty costume jewelry; classic black and bone pumps (of course they'll be clean and shiney); two scarves-a long one to tie around your chest if it's a bare shoulder shot and a smaller one to wrap around your head to protect your hair while making up and to prevent any make-up from rubbing off on the clothes; a hairbrush and comb; a toothbrush; a cosmetic wardrobe; and your voucher book. Carry as little cash as possible. Leave your watch and other valuable jewelry at home-you'll just have to remove them anyway and most studios will not be responsible for your loss.

How fast can an agency find me a job?

Don't get the idea that the moment you join an agency all your problems will be over, and don't expect an agency to call you weekly to give you a work schedule! Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. You don't get "sent out" for most jobs. You still have to audition like everybody else, and you still have to go around and show your face to clients so they will know who you are and become familiar with your "look".

How can I find runway work?

If you have an agent, ask for a list of department stores and independent live runway coordinators. If you don't have an agent, look in the phone book. Ask other models if they will give you contacts and if you can use their names when contacted. Keep an eye on country clubs, night clubs, salons, restaurants, clothing boutiques, fashion schools, etc., because they put shows together and often look for models to work for them.

Who conducts an audition?

You may audition for one person or a panel, but it is usually the Director or Casting Director who has the final vote as to who is to be used in a show.

What is a Casting Director?

A director of a film or any modeling assignment who may also select the people and models for feature and minor films, industrial films and television commercials and videos.

What is the difference between an Agent and a Casting Director?

An Agent does not have the authority to cast a model or actor for a particular role, but a Casting Director does. An agent takes a percentage of your income for a commission and a Casting Director does not because they are paid directly by producers.

How can I locate Casting Directors in my area?

The phone book will list them, or ask your agent for a list.

When auditioning, should I ask who the auditors are?

No. If the auditors want you to know who they are, they will introduce themselves.

How can I find out what auditors want?

You cannot and you should not. They are always looking for someone interesting and talented for every role, so be yourself.

What does an auditor expect from a reading?

A great performance from you. No more, no less.

What should I do when they ask me, "What have you done?"

This is the best time to express who you are rather than merely telling them what you have done.

What if I have little or no experience?

What you have actually done is not as important as how you present yourself.

How can I find out if I was selected?

If you are selected, they will call you; if you were not selected, they will not call you. It usually does not help to find out why you may have been passed over...it's just part of the business.

What roles should I audition for?

You should audition every chance you get for any role that is available for you. By approaching auditioning this way you will get more experience and you will have more to put in your resume, and you'll be making more money! Don't be picky, just work!

Why should I send a picture and resume rather than go in person?

A good mail campaign can create a desire on the part of the agent, casting director or auditors to want to see you in person.

What should I wear to an audition?

Wear whatever is appropriate for the role for which you are auditioning.
