For CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES 2: A SECOND HELPING - The Pastor: Indeterminate age, has been the pastor at this church for some time, has a wife "half his age," the ladies have a great deal of respect for him and tolerate his wife, a nice man if perhaps not a terribly dynamic preacher, lives a life of service and humility; Mrs. Elroy Engelson (Karin): Mid-Late 40s, Beverly's mother, the most fashionable of the ladies and the best cook in the kitchen, married young, has always strived to be a good wife and mother, appears happy, but had she been born in another time her life might have turned out quite differently; Beverly Signe (Engelson) Hauge: Early-Mid 20s, newlywed, left home a year ago to move to "the City" with her new husband Harry after graduating from the "U," grew up in this kitchen and has a great deal of affection for the women of the basement, strong-willed but has a good head on her shoulders and a genuine love for the community; The Widow Snustad (Vivian): Late 60s, her husband died very early in their marriage, the matriarch of the kitchen, holds tightly to tradition with both hands, the other women get a kick out of her and secretly enjoy watching her squirm a little when she is challenged; Mrs. Gilmer Gilmerson (Mavis): 50s, able-bodied farm wife, extremely good-natured, often tries to dispel any tension in the kitchen by changing the subject or telling a joke, knows the lineage of every family in town, always willing to pitch in and fix someone's tractor, peel a potato, or scrub the lutefisk pot, believes hard work is good for the soul.
