Sean survives the accident relatively unharmed but with an unwavering conviction to uncover that "lost memory" and find the money his grandfather buried. To that end, he recruits his roommate Speck to assist him. They only clue they’ve got is in Grandpa McFadden’s cryptic dying words: "55 Holly Star". After a string of dead ends, Sean resorts to putting himself purposefully in harm’s way, seeking another Near Death Experience and, he hopes, another clue. Meanwhile, to make ends meet, Sean takes a job selling Christmas trees with his childhood friend, Gina Gioletti. There is a spark between Gina and Sean that might ignite into a romance if Sean’s lack of confidence doesn’t continually stand in the way. When Gina discovers that Sean is trying to "cheat death" in order to find money, she is alarmed and disgusted. By the time Sean pieces together the mystery of that fateful night and is finally able to answer the question "What is 55 Holly Star?", a more important thought has formed in his brain: Perhaps money doesn’t matter as much as he thinks. Hulot is a very sympathetic detective and he is the old friend of FBI agent Frank Ottobre; together they will do their best to discover the murderer. During their investigation, the killer strikes again: information technology millionaire genius Allen Yoshida, who created the operating system competing with Microsoft, is found drained and horribly mutilated, in an underground car park. Other murders will follow, everyone of them is pre-announced by a phone call and a song, as "leitmotiv". The killer's track to lead to the next victim. A peculiarity of these killings is that all the bodies are mutilated and their face is taken away to make a mask. The two detectives, who are trying to solve this puzzle, in a city which is not accustomed to violence and cannot accept it, meet many incredibly moving characters such as Pierrot, the young boy with down syndrome, who is a sort of human computer, and with his surprising expertise in music, will help Hulot and Ottobre to solve the enigma.
